I'm Kamaldeep Kaur
Artist Bio
Art connects to the depths of being, a truth Kamaldeep Kaur fully embraces on her creative journey. Born and raised in India, Kamaldeep now explores her life in Canada, seeking to enrich her artistic practice by immersing herself in diverse cultures. Her initial path was far removed from the art world; she studied actuarial science and followed a pragmatic, well-trodden career route.
Kamaldeep initially worked in mixed media, using charcoal, gold leaf, and acrylic. Now a decade into her art practice, she shifted to gouache and natural pigment colours on Wasli or watercolour paper, embracing traditional (Indian) techniques.
She is an artist resident at the Art Gallery of Burlington. She has exhibited widely in her home country, with more than 40 exhibitions, and has shown her work internationally, including shows in Canada, USA and Germany. Her recent art fairs include The Other Art Fair- Chicago, Brooklyn, Artist Project (Toronto) 2024, 2025 and the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair 2023 in Canada. She received an Artist Encounter grant from TOAF in 2023, as well as support from the Ontario Arts Council in 2024. She was also awarded the All India and Zonal Award from the Prafulla Art Foundation (India) in 2017. She got shortlisted for 2025 City of Hamilton Arts Award (creator category).
Her work explores the self and surroundings, an ongoing dialogue between her inner experiences and the external world. As she continues to evolve personally and artistically in her new Canadian home, she remains committed to expressing the universal emotions that connect us all, drawing on the rich tapestry of cultures that surround her.
Artist Statement
My work explores the dialogue between the self and the world around me, weaving together inner experiences and external realities. Over time, my practice has evolved from representational work into conceptual art, a transformation embodied in my series Illusion of Time. In this body of work, I explore the universal desire to move through time and reshape past choices.
At the heart of Illusion of Time is a female figure initially faceless, who gradually develops distinct features. She represents an aspect of myself: a traveler returning to her past to affirm that she is not strange, but unique. She seeks to express her own identity and her own way of seeing life. Painted with gouache and natural pigments on Wasli or watercolour paper, the series draws on traditional Indian miniature techniques. The imagery juxtaposes monochrome tones—black, white, ochre, and aged textures with vibrant colour accents, symbolizing the figure as a beacon of the future. This contrast creates a layered, illustrated narrative in which the character attempts to bring loved ones from her past into the present, blurring the boundaries between reality and fantasy.
Continuing this exploration, my current series, She Walks Between the Moments, extends the narrative of llusion of Time. Here, the central figure appears as a Nayika, moving through various stages of love: waiting, yearning, dreaming, meeting, and merging with her beloved and with herself. Nature becomes both her mirror and a portal into different realms of emotion and consciousness. Each work unfolds like a dreamscape, where memory and imagination dissolve into one another. Time is no longer linear but fluid, looping through the seasons of the heart.
Rendered in the delicate tradition of Indian miniature painting and combined with contemporary techniques, the series blends surreal landscapes with intimate, symbolic details woven with silence, stardust, and the feminine divine. Both Illusion of Time and She Walks Between the Moments invite viewers to see through a cultural lens that celebrates the interplay between dreams and reality, love and longing, and the timeless journey of self-discovery.

My Art Journey
Pre-Artist Life
Ever since I was a child, art has always been my passion. I spent countless hours drawing and painting, but I never imagined turning it into a career. Instead, I followed a more conventional path, studying mathematics and actuarial science and working in the corporate sector. Despite my success, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something important was missing from my life. The structured, number-driven world of my job left me yearning for the creativity and freedom that art had always provided me.
Transitioning to a Life of Art
For almost five years, I attended art classes under Rohit Sir on weekends. His guidance helped me learn various art techniques and even led me to conduct art exhibitions. My first exhibition in 2015 was a milestone I never imagined achieving.Gradually, I began selling my artwork and started offering art classes. This experience inspired me to consider leaving my job to follow my passion for art. I began my art career by teaching at an art institute and later secured a government project to teach art in public schools. This marked the true beginning of my journey in the art world, where I could finally embrace my passion fully.
Pandemic Time
During the pandemic, when everything was shut down, I began exploring new mediums, particularly digital art. I was invited to go live on Instagram to discuss art, attended online workshops, and participated in virtual art exhibitions.Additionally, I discovered NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) as a new art medium. After studying this form, I started creating digital artworks for NFTs and minted them on online platforms. This experience was entirely new and exciting for me, adding a fresh dimension to my artistic journey.
Life in Canada
In 2022, my husband and I moved to Canada. Moving to a new country is always challenging, but I was fortunate to find opportunities in the local art scene. I applied for the Toronto Art Fair (TOAF) and not only got selected but was also chosen for the Art Encounter program, which allowed me to hold my first exhibition in Canada. My work was also selected for the Juried Show by the Art Gallery of Mississauga, and I participated in the Artist Project in 2024
Next Steps
The first half of 2025 has been a period of exciting growth and recognition in my artistic career. I received two significant grants - one for an artist project and another supporting my participation at The Other Art Fair in Chicago. My work was also featured at the inaugural Hamilton Art Fair at the Cotton Factory, and I was both nominated and shortlisted for the City of Hamilton Artist Award in the Creator Category. In addition, I have enjoyed working as an artist educator for “Arts in Community” in Hamilton. This year, I was accepted as an artist-in-residence at the Art Gallery of Burlington, where I am preparing for a solo exhibition.
