I'm Kamaldeep Kaur
Artist Bio
Art connects to the depths of being, a truth Kamaldeep Kaur fully embraces on her creative journey.
Born and raised in India, Kamaldeep now explores her life in Canada, seeking to enrich her artistic practice by immersing herself in diverse cultures. Her initial path was far removed from the art world; she studied actuarial science and followed a pragmatic, well-trodden career route.
Kamaldeep initially worked in mixed media, using charcoal, gold leaf, and acrylic. Now a decade into her art practice, she shifted to gouache and natural pigment colours on Wasli or watercolour paper, embracing traditional (Indian) techniques.
She has exhibited widely in her home country, with more than 40 exhibitions, and has shown her work internationally, including shows in Canada and Germany. Her recent art fairs include the Artist Project 2024 and the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair 2023 in Canada. In 2023, she received an Artist Encounter grant from TOAF, as well as support from the Ontario Arts Council in 2024. She was also awarded the All India and Zonal Award from the Prafulla Art Foundation in 2027.
Her work explores the self and surroundings, an ongoing dialogue between her inner experiences and the external world. As she continues to evolve personally and artistically in her new Canadian home, she remains committed to expressing the universal emotions that connect us all, drawing on the rich tapestry of cultures that surround her.
Artist Statement
My work explores the self and surroundings; I form an ongoing dialogue between inner experiences and the external world. I have traversed a considerable distance in my practice to now create conceptual art. This evolution is epitomized by my series, “Illusion of Time,” where I explore the universal longing to travel through time and alter past decisions. The female character, who initially had no face but gradually ~~~~develops features, represents an aspect of myself. She travels back to her past to tell others that she is not weird, but unique. She expresses her own identity and her own way of looking at life.
I use gouache and natural pigment colours on Wasli or watercolour paper, embracing traditional (Indian) techniques. The visual language of this series employs monochrome tones—black and white, ochre, and old texture—juxtaposed with vibrant colours that represent the character as a beacon of the future. This contrast creates a dramatic, illustrated storytelling experience. As the series progresses, the character endeavors to bring loved ones from her past into the present, and the boundaries between reality and fantasy begin to blur.
My work continues to delve deeper into the dichotomy between reality and fantasy. My character navigates two worlds: one steeped in the motifs and styles of Rajasthani miniature art, and the other grounded in her dreamy reality. Through this exploration, I draw inspiration from nature and my own perceptions, resulting in artworks that reflect feelings of beauty, confidence, and inner peace. Ultimately, my work invites viewers to see the world through a more cultural lens, celebrating the intricate dance between our dreams and reality.

My Art Journey

Pre-Artist Life
Ever since I was a child, art has always been my passion. I spent countless hours drawing and painting, but I never imagined turning it into a career. Instead, I followed a more conventional path, studying mathematics and actuarial science and working in the corporate sector. Despite my success, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something important was missing from my life. The structured, number-driven world of my job left me yearning for the creativity and freedom that art had always provided me.
Transitioning to a Life of Art
For almost five years, I attended art classes under Rohit Sir on weekends. His guidance helped me learn various art techniques and even led me to conduct art exhibitions. My first exhibition in 2015 was a milestone I never imagined achieving.Gradually, I began selling my artwork and started offering art classes. This experience inspired me to consider leaving my job to follow my passion for art. I began my art career by teaching at an art institute and later secured a government project to teach art in public schools. This marked the true beginning of my journey in the art world, where I could finally embrace my passion fully.

Pandemic Time
During the pandemic, when everything was shut down, I began exploring new mediums, particularly digital art. I was invited to go live on Instagram to discuss art, attended online workshops, and participated in virtual art exhibitions.Additionally, I discovered NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) as a new art medium. After studying this form, I started creating digital artworks for NFTs and minted them on online platforms. This experience was entirely new and exciting for me, adding a fresh dimension to my artistic journey.
